We have been celebrating Mother’s Day for hundreds of years, however Father’s Day is a little more recent.
There are several stories of how it started. The most popular being that it started with a woman called Sonora Louise Smart in Washington.
Sonora’s dad brought up her family, after her mother died during childbirth.
Having heard a speech in church about Mother’s Day, Sonora thought dads should be celebrated too.
It’s believed that after several clergymen accepted her idea, June 19th, 1910 was the first unofficial Father’s Day.
In 1966, US President Lyndon B. Johnson decided the third Sunday in June should be Father’s Day. Six years later President Richard Nixon signed it into law. For more information visit https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48530462
