Reporting accidents and incident is important for any business to track trends and reduce future accidents from re-occurring. Action plans can then be put into place to get to the root cause and control measures can then be put in place.
It is important businesses have an accident book on site in order to log accidents and incidents.
All accidents no matter what size, big or small, need reporting. A small accident could be a paper cut compared to a bigger accident which might involve a broken bone.
An important aspect to remember too is that it is the law to report accidents under the RIDDOR regulations 2013 which fit certain criteria.
RIDDOR stands for; Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations.
So, what are reportable injuries?
• The death of any person
• Specified Injuries to workers
• Injuries to workers which result in their incapacitation for more than 7 days
• Injuries to non-workers which result in them being taken directly to hospital for treatment, or specified injuries to non-workers which occur on hospital premises

Specified injuries can be broken down into;
• Bone fracture
• Amputation
• Injury causing permanent blinding or reduction in sight
• Any crush injury to the head or torso causing damage to the brain or internal organs
• Burn injury covering more than 10% of the body
• Any scalping requiring hospital treatment
• Loss of consciousness caused by head injury or asphyxia
• Enclosed space injury leading to hypothermia or heat induced illness, or requiring resuscitation or admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours.

Occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences also fall under the RIDDOR regulations, so these are vitally important to report too. Examples include; carpal tunnel syndrome, occupational asthma, to dangerous occurrences – collapsing of cranes or plant failure.
